Abstract

The quality of water used in the equipment of dental clinics has worried the specialists of the area, once the use of water contaminated with microbial agents represents risks of cross infection to both the doctor of dental surgery and the patient. This work investigated the presence of yeast of the genus Candida in the water of the dental equipment of the basic attendance clinics of Faculdade de Odontologia de Pernambuco. The water samples were collected from the reservoirs, triple syringes and the high and low speed headpiece. A volume of 50mL of each sample was collected in two Erlenmayer flasks, one with 0.1mL of sodium thiosulfate 10%, and another without thiosulfate. Then, aliquots of 2mL of each sample were seeded on Petri dishs containing Sabouraud Dextrose Agar medium for isolating of yeasts and posterior purification. After that stage, the isolated yeasts were identified to the level of species through the observation of morphology and pigmentation of colonies in CHROMagarTM Candida medium. Two species belonging to genus Candida were identified, Candida albicans and Candida krusei; the high and low speed headpiece were the parts of the equipment with the larger prevalence of these microorganisms.
