Philosophical reflections on life in society: society and social justice in the light of Augustine of Hippo

Abstract

When considering human society, the presence of misery and disorder is clearly evident in many aspects of this social body. Fractioned into many perspectives, society establishes itself as an emerging environment of great inequalities and inequities committed by its members. Despite all injustices, all human beings seek their own peace. This peace cannot be achieved without order, since both terms are, to some degree, equivalent. Justice, in turn, having as its object to give each what is theirs, is realized as a restorative good of order par excellence and particularly necessary to human nature, since its corruption. Social justice is sought as an indispensable remedial good for society and the order of this social body; therefore, it must be understood and exercised while valuing the well-being of individuals.
