About the Journal
Aims and Scope
Biomas Journal aims to publish and disseminate original scientific knowledge on biodiversity, environment, and sustainability, encompassing different scales of analysis, local, national, and international, under an interdisciplinary approach.
The journal welcomes theoretical and empirical studies that engage with fields such as environmental sciences, geography, biology, ecology, environmental education, philosophy, territorial planning, sustainability, and related areas, contributing to scientific advancement and the democratization of knowledge through open access to its content.
Target Audience
Biomas Journal is intended for researchers, educators, professionals, and undergraduate and graduate students in areas related to biodiversity, environment, and sustainability, as well as all those interested in scientific production in these fields.
Peer Review Process
Manuscripts submitted to Biomas Journal undergo a double anonymous peer review process, consisting of the following stages:
Originality Check
Manuscripts are screened using plagiarism and self-plagiarism detection tools to ensure the originality of the work.
Preliminary Editorial Evaluation
The Editorial Board evaluates the manuscript’s alignment with the journal’s aims and scope, editorial guidelines, and its scientific potential for publication.
Peer Review (Double anonymous peer review)
Manuscripts approved in the previous stage are forwarded, without author identification, to at least two expert reviewers, who assess the scientific merit of the work.
Final Editorial Decision
Based on the reviewers’ reports, the Editorial Board issues the final decision through a consolidated editorial opinion.
Evaluation Criteria
Manuscripts are evaluated considering, among others, the following criteria:
- Relevance and originality of the topic;
- Engagement with the scientific literature in the field;
- Currency and relevance of the references;
- Clarity in defining the object, objectives, and justification;
- Conceptual rigor;
- Theoretical and methodological consistency;
- Adequacy and soundness of the methodology;
- Quality and robustness of the analysis;
- Structure and coherence of the text.
Possible Decisions
At the end of the review process, reviewers may recommend:
- Accept;
- Mandatory revisions;
- Reject;
- Submit to another journal.
Authors are informed of the editorial decision. In cases of mandatory revisions, the revised manuscript may be submitted to a new round of evaluation. The Editorial Board reserves the right to reject manuscripts whose revisions do not adequately address the reviewers’ recommendations.
At the end of each annual volume, the journal publishes a list of reviewers who collaborated in the evaluation process.
Editorial Ethics and Best Practices
BIOMAS Journal adopts high ethical standards at all stages of the editorial process and is committed to scientific integrity, transparency, and responsibility in academic communication.
The journal follows the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), applicable to editors, reviewers, and authors.
Authors must submit original works, declare any conflicts of interest, and ensure that data, results, and references are presented ethically and responsibly. Research involving human participants or animals must indicate approval by ethics committees, when applicable.
Reviewers must act impartially, confidentially, and ethically, declare any potential conflicts of interest, and provide technical and well-founded evaluations.
The Editor and the Editorial Board ensure editorial independence, confidentiality of the process, and the adoption of appropriate measures in cases of scientific misconduct, such as plagiarism, self-plagiarism, data fabrication, or falsification.
When necessary, the journal will publish corrections, clarifications, or retractions, preserving the integrity of the scientific record.
Publication Frequency
Biomas Journal is a semiannual publication, with two issues per volume:
- First issue: May to August;
- Second issue: September to December.
Open Access Policy
Biomas Journal adopts an immediate open access model, allowing free and unrestricted access to all its content, with no submission or publication fees.
Copyright
Authors retain the copyright of their works, which are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), allowing sharing and adaptation of the content, provided that the original authorship and source of publication are properly acknowledged.
Digital Preservation
Biomas Journal is part of the Journals Portal of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Pernambuco (IFPE), which provides institutional digital preservation and archiving of its content, ensuring permanent access to published materials.
